The Iranian Revolution closed off his route eastward, steering him south to Argentina instead. What followed was a series of unexpected adventures across South Africa, Europe, North America, and eventually South America.

"I actually rode off the edge of my map," he chuckles, recalling a time when information was scarce and help came from fellow travelers rather than Google Maps. The spontaneity of the trip brought challenges but also unforgettable moments, leading to his book which captures those raw, unfiltered experiences.

Then and Now: Life on the Road

Chris contrasts the analog unpredictability of the 1980s with today's GPS-powered travel. "Back then, the road was full of surprises. Now, you Google the place and it's almost like you've already been there," he says. Yet despite the evolution in technology, one thing hasn't changed—the kindness of strangers. Whether in the Iranian countryside or African villages, he found generosity in unexpected places.

Motivation and Meaning

Why did he set out on such a daunting journey? Chris admits, he didn’t fully know at the time. It was, in hindsight, a coming-of-age story—stepping into adulthood by stepping out of the familiar. Years later, after decades of business ventures and family life, his recent trip to finally reach Australia became a “coming of old age” journey, symbolizing reflection and closure.

Having experienced countries often portrayed in the media as dangerous or unfriendly, Chris offers a refreshingly human perspective: "The people on the ground are nothing like what the media portrays. They're generous, kind, and just living their lives." He underscores the disconnect between perception and reality, encouraging travelers to seek truth through their own eyes.

The Businessman Behind the Biker

Chris isn’t just a globetrotter. With a successful corporate life under his belt, he’s also a seasoned entrepreneur. From navigating boardrooms to battling banks in court after the 2008 crash, he’s faced challenges that would break many. But his road-wisdom helped him persevere. "If you can cross the Sahara on a motorbike, standing in front of a judge doesn’t seem so tough," he remarks.

To the young generation, always glued to screens yet yearning to see the world, Chris has a heartfelt message. "You can't experience the world through a screen. Look up. The world is richer, more colorful, and more real than anything your phone can show you." He encourages young people to take risks, travel light, and discover life beyond the algorithm.
