Kaj: Welcome, Dr. Almitra Berry! Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to focus on culturally and linguistically diverse learners in education?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Thank you, Kaj! I started as a high school history teacher, which opened my eyes to the disparities in education, particularly for students from diverse backgrounds. My journey led me to advocate for equitable practices, aiming to ensure that all children receive the quality education they deserve.

Kaj: What are some of the primary challenges that culturally and linguistically diverse learners face in the U.S. education system?

Dr. Almitra Berry: A significant challenge is that many pre-service teachers lack the training necessary to support diverse learners effectively. Additionally, systemic issues in education often prioritize adult needs over those of children, leading to inequitable resource allocation.

Kaj: How do systemic inequities affect students from marginalized communities?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Systemic inequities create barriers that prevent children from marginalized communities from accessing the same educational opportunities as their peers. This disparity often results in children of color receiving less support and resources, which perpetuates the achievement gap.

Kaj: What influence do educational publishers and lobbying groups have on the materials used in schools?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Educational publishers and lobbying groups, such as the American Publishing Association, significantly influence which materials are adopted in schools. Their focus on profit often leads to the prioritization of materials that do not adequately serve all student populations.

Kaj: How can parents advocate for their children's education in light of these challenges?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Parents can play an essential role by actively participating in school board meetings, voting in local elections, and educating themselves about their rights. Their involvement can help hold schools accountable for providing quality education.

Kaj: What advice do you have for children of color navigating the education system?

Dr. Almitra Berry: I encourage resilience. Children should pursue their education and seek mentorship. It’s vital for parents to stay engaged and advocate for their children’s educational needs.

Kaj: Can you tell us about your book series, “Affecting Change,” and its purpose?

Dr. Almitra Berry: The "Affecting Change" series, particularly "Affecting Change for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners," aims to provide educators with actionable strategies for improving reading instruction and fostering inclusive environments. It emphasizes self-reflection and practical approaches.

Kaj: How can educators incorporate your book series into their teaching practices?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Educators can use the book as a resource to enhance their instructional methods and promote discussions around language diversity and cultural competence. The strategies provided can help create a more supportive learning environment for all students.

Kaj: Where can our readers find more information about you and your work?

Dr. Almitra Berry: Readers can visit my official website and connect with me on social media for more insights. My books are also available online, providing educators and parents with valuable resources to support diverse learners.
